Comparing 5 natural wines

What is natural wine? Pure fermented grape juice? An ethical and responsible vision? A vast subject to which we add our two cents in 5 life and wine pairings, and so many reasons to applaud the sincerity of the approach: artisanal gesture, respect for the terroir, truth of taste, philosophy of sharing, militant commitment.
Cheers!

1. NATURE WINE, IT'S LIKE RAW MILK CHEESE

The late Marcel Lapierre said it! And what this pioneer of 100% grape Beaujolais, carrier of Jules Chauvet’s “naturist” philosophy, tells us, by comparing a sulfur-free morgon to a soft-paste Ariège cabrioulet, is that plain wine is not a industrial label tampered with to look pretty on supermarket shelves. It is a lively, surprising, adventurous wine that does not lie and cannot be tamed by the first supermarket customer.

In short, no connection with the Caprice des Dieux…

What are we drinking?
Cuvée Marcel MMXV, Morgon AOP, Mathieu & Camille Lapierre, Domaine Marcel Lapierre

A great 100% Gamay cuvée produced with the oldest vines of the estate and structured around round tannins like balloons. A first choice companion for our Barbary duck rillettes in large pieces and worked with the Rolls des palmipeds, the Muscovy duck!

2. NATURE WINE, IT'S LIKE A MIDNIGHT BATH

Quietly, with friends, to digest in the cool, but not necessarily in the neighbor’s super chlorinated swimming pool, rather in the ocean for a sensual and salty swim heckled by the movement of the waves. To drink nature is to share this idea of freedom, to go towards “naked” wines, without chemical makeup, produced by winegrowers who respect their terroir and care about their environment. Come to think of it, better an unsupervised swim than an aperitif with a lifeguard!

What are we drinking?
Tempête 2016, Vin de France, Camille & Mathias Marquet, Château Lestignac

Coming straight from the Dordogne, this splendid blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon reaches heights of elegance and fruity delicacy. We will give him without hesitation for a second our French chicken rillettes, shredded by hand and cooked naturally, for an explosive mix!

NATURE WINE, IT'S LIKE PART OF A COUNTRY

Like an improvised picnic and a checkered tablecloth thrown in the grass, but not that of a French pruned garden and well clear behind the ears. Rather in the open field, on the edge of the forest or between the rows of an organically or biodynamically grown vine. The natural wine, the real one, is quite logically the result of ethical viticulture, without pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers with a skull on the can.

What are we drinking?
Racines 2015, Vin de France, Claude Courtois, Les Cailloux du Paradis

A great natural wine, complex, gourmet and deep, assembled (at the very least) on a dozen grape varieties by the great Solognese sorcerer Claude Courtois. How can we compete more with dignity than with our recipe for mushrooms stuffed with farmhouse goose rillettes and a condiment of Tuscan summer truffle?

4. NATURE WINE IS LIKE A COOL FAMILY MEAL

Like an old ’80s pub with kids dancing around Grandpa’s tractor. Whether on the fruit or on the structure, natural wine doesn’t exclude anyone and doesn’t mean putting on your best for Sunday lunch chicken. It is with a view to sharing, conviviality, and eating together that these wines without borders have shattered the tasting codes to put everyone at ease around a good bottle. And then, in grandpa’s time, wine tasted like that!

What are we drinking?
Ormiale 2015, Bordeaux Supérieur AOP, Fabrice Domercq & Jasper Morrison, Ormiale

A jewel of the Entre-Deux-Mers of Bordeaux, bursting with fruit, satin like a fabric, carved by a true iconoclast of the vine, generous and visionary. With that, we can easily imagine a rascal pairing with our mini-tatins with duck foie gras with Armagnac and coarse pepper, just to dynamise the aperitif!

5. NATURal WINE is LIKE A COCOONING SUNDAY

For a Sunday aperitif at the height of comfort, what better than good bread, good wine and a good jar of artisanal rillettes to unpin in front of a fireplace? Stronger than nettle tea, natural wine goes super well with those moments of intense contemplation, when the autumn rain hits the tiles, your feet warm under a baby alpaca wool blanket. The icing on the pudding, with their very low amount of added sulphites, these wines are guaranteed to be free of hangovers, zombie complexions and Hangover Free.

What are we drinking?
Clos Massotte, Ondine Vin de France 2012, Pierre-Nicolas Massotte

Made from gray and white Grenache, with a hint of Muscat from Alexandria, this nugget from Roussillon is a very nice maceration white, dense and facetious. For our famous saffron risotto with scallops and Tuscan truffles, it is more than the ideal tasting companion, it is a soul mate!

Natural wine or not, alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health, so consume in moderation.
